In the year of 2007, nine countries reported cases of Avian Influenza, with 86 cases total, 56 of those cases resulting in death. In 2006, 115 human cases have occurred in nine countries, with a total of 79 deaths. The virus has been continuing to infect people even today, the latest cases being (borrowed directly from WHO's website):
14 January 2009 -- The Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt has announced a new human case of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection. The case is a 21-months old female from 6th October Governorate, Kerdasa District whose symptoms began on 9 January 2009. 7 January 2009 -- The Ministry of Health in China has reported a new case of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The case is a 19-year old female from Chaoyang District, Beijing. She developed symptoms on 24 Dec 2008, was hospitalized, and died on 5 January 2009. he Ministry of Health in Viet Nam has reported a new confirmed case of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The case has been confirmed at the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE). The case is an 8-year old girl from Dien Trung commune, Ba Thuoc district, Thanh Hoa province. She developed symptoms on 27 December 2008 and was hospitalized on 2 January 2009. She is currently in a stable condition. The 19-year-old male, from Kandal Province, developed symptoms on 28 November and initially sought medical attention at a local health centre on 30 November. 9 December 2008 -- The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced two new confirmed cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. A 9-year-old female from RiauProvince developed symptoms on 7 November and was hospitalized on 12 November. Currently, a total of 15 countries have seen infections and cases. Global Public Health Intelligence Network ( GPHIN) for example is a complex warning system that is constantly on watch for any new developments or instances with bird flu, so as the world can have immediate notification. GPHIN is one of the most important groups in the world pertaining to a warning system for bird flu. WHO also contributes greatly to the cause, offering similar warning systems. Health Officials Currently rank bird flu on the scale of pandemic alert, and is not yet deemed a pandemic. However, the risk varies from location to location. For instance, Asian currently is under high alert, and measures are beign taken to prevent outbreak (for example, the health checks when crossing from country to country)
